October 6-12 is fire prevention week, and here at Volunteer Hose Company #2 we make October the Fire Prevention Month. The goal of fire prevention is to raise awareness in our community on how to prevent damaging fires, especially with the children and seniors in our area.
With the children, we teach them the following:
Calling 911 when there is a fire
Stop, drop and roll if their clothes are on fire
Not to play with fire (including stove, microwave, candles, etc.)
To find a way out of the house (at least 2 ways out) when there is a fire or when the fire alarm sounds
Stay by a window if it's too dangerous or scary to go out of the room
Close any doors behind them when leaving the house
Go to a safe place outside of the house, a safe meeting spot
etc.
With the seniors, we go over the following:
Give space heaters space. Place the heater at least three feet from any combustible material, such as bedding and furniture
NEVER use an extension cord with a space heater
Install a smoke alarm outside or inside each bedroom or sleeping
area and on every level of your home
Purchase alarms with a 10-year lithium battery to eliminate the need
to change the batteries every six months. Lithium batteries are more
expensive than typical 9-volt batteries; however, they are designed
to last the life of the alarm. However, the alarm battery still must be
tested once a month.
Remember to “stand by your pan” and never leave cooking food unattended. Heat cooking oils gradually and use extra caution when deep-frying.
etc.
We would like to thank The Building Blocks, The Learning Ladder, The Learning Center, West Haverstraw Learning Center, West Haverstraw Elementary School and the North Rockland Seniors for giving us the opportunity to give the fire prevention presentation.
We would also like to thank Thiells FD for having us with them at West Haverstraw Elementary School.
