WEST HAVERSTRAW FIRE DEPARTMENT
MARTIN BURKE
At 2:30 am on September 12, 1927, a call to West Haverstraw Fire Department was put out. The call was a house fire at the Mead's Corner section in Garnerville.

While responding to the call Mr. Burke accidentally fell off of the fire truck he was riding. The injured Burke was found on the roadside by Harold Wilkinson, a passer-by. Mr. Wilkinson rushed Burke to Dr. Glass' office for treatment. After examination, the doctor had Mr. Burke admitted to Good Samaritan hospital where he died at 3:00 the following afternoon.

Mr. Burke was the Village of West Haverstraw Assessor and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Clarence Babcock, the homeowner, was also a casualty of the fire.
